| more than likely cause: improper installation of timing belt (too tight). You would be #19 that i've been keeping track of here. Unfortunately seems to be rather common. The issue is that as the motor gets hot, it expands. The belt however, will not stretch. Nissan thought of this and thats why we have an automatic tensioner. Be default, it must be set within a specific amount of throw to acommidate for the engine's expansion (approximately 4 mm). If you set the belt too tight, the motor expands, the belt doesn't and something usually gives. This puts undo stress on the studs that hold the timing belt idlers in place and typically, the upper idler breaks first as it is under the most stress (in my estimation, not fact). If someone else built the motor and set the timing belt, take it back and bitch and complain. Good luck with whatever route you choose. I ended up getting another motor.
